You know, I think I enjoyed Netflix’s Space Force more than most people, but in the very first episode, some troubling themes are established and then carried throughout the series. Eventually, he approves the launch, and it is successful, with the character who represents “the science” saying to him “You were right, but how did you know?”

For one, Sorry I’m Late I Saw A Cat Vintage Retro Shirt just because the launch was successful, doesn’t mean the scientist was wrong. And for two, the umbrella thing, while a clever metaphor, is just kind of a strawman to show that the General’s “common sense” was as good or better than the scientific consensus. There is for sure, in spaceflight and in many other things, a balance that has to be struck between caution and action, and it is worthy of consideration. But the show does like to play around with the idea that someone with zero expertise can have just as valid an opinion as someone with all the expertise.
